About the Black Hawk Special: I was given this cut-off piece of ash from a building site, so I kept it in my basement for years not knowing what to do with it.

The wood piece was about 4"x 8"x 24", and back then I saved all the junk I could. (Some advice here DON"T EVER MAKE A MODEL IN ASH.) I got this drawing of Lockhart's car at the Briggs Cunningham Museum in Anaheim. I whittled at this ash with everything I had, and eventually it took shape.

Next I took on the wheel pants. Again I was stupid, I made it out of hard maple, another wood that knew how to fight back. I made a mold from the maple piece and cast all four sets. I cast these as shells so I could run a wheel inside.

I eventually ran into another snag. I hadn't thought about the inside cockpit. I ended up by milling it out from the bottom , plugging it later. This is another car I finished at the last second for the Stamford Show.

This was the last car legend Frank Lockhart drove, out at Daytona Beach in 1928. – Will Neely, October 2008
